Kevin Casey of InformationWeek said there are more options than ever for businesses to have a data backup solution, but he wonders why many small- to mid-sized businesses haven't yet taken to backing up their information.
A Symantec survey from earlier this year showed that 57 percent of small businesses and 47 percent of mid-sized businesses have no disaster recovery plans. Bernard Laroche, senior director of SMB product marketing at Symantec, said in InformationWeek that it's not good new and SMBs are not prepared for disaster.
Casey said there are many excuses he hears as to why businesses don't get data backup, including the program's expense, not believing a disaster will happen, forgetting to get one and not wanting to put information in the cloud. He said all of these reasons can easily be proven to be spurious. With not moving into the cloud, he said that's a businesses prerogative, but it isn't a good excuse.
"There are plenty of reliable on-premises options," Casey said on not wanting to use cloud backup. "A key thing to remember if you stick with physical, on-premises backup: You need to keep at least one copy of your data in a different location from your primary infrastructure. Otherwise, you're not particularly well-protected." |
